Course enrollment limit
Sessional course enrollment limit
Background
In addition to program-specific compulsory courses (e.g., RST9999Y, BME4444Y, BME1010, etc.), which are automatically added to the student timetable, graduate students registered at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering may self-enroll into core and/or elective courses through ACORN at the beginning of each academic session (i.e., Fall, Winter, and Summer). The following table indicates the maximum number of courses that students may enroll in per session, weighed as full course equivalents (FCEs).
Degree Program |
FCEs |
MEng (Full-Time) |
2.50 |
MEng (Extended Full-Time) |
1.00 |
MASc |
2.00 |
PhD |
2.00 |
For example, aside from compulsory courses, which are not part of the above quota, a PhD student may self-enroll into a maximum of four half-courses (0.5 FCE each) in any given session. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their supervisor(s) and/or supervisory committee to schedule coursework appropriately because some courses may not be available in certain years and/or sessions.
TIP: Contact relevant course instructor(s) to learn more about course availability for the current and/or future academic sessions.
Procedure
1.0: Course enrollment
1.1: BME courses
During the enrollment period, students may self-enroll into courses through ACORN. Students who encounter difficulty during enrollment of BME courses should contact the Graduate Office through the BME Help Centre.
1.2: Non-BME courses
In addition to subject matter, course codes (e.g., “ECE”) also indicate the department responsible for managing course enrollment. Whereas students are able to self-enroll in BME courses through ACORN, non-BME courses may have different enrollment procedures. However, students should first attempt to self-enroll in non-BME courses through ACORN. Students who encounter difficulty during enrollment of non-BME courses should complete an SGS Add/Drop Course(s) form, and submit it to the graduate administrator of the hosting department to get instructions on next steps for enrollment.
2.0: Course enrollment above the limit
Students are discouraged from exceeding the course enrollment limit. However, in special circumstances (e.g., a course will not be offered at a later date), students may seek an exemption to enroll in courses above the sessional limit. To this end, students must complete an SGS Add/Drop Course(s) form and garner the appropriate signatures, from the course instructor and the student’s own supervisor, to request accommodation from BME. Accommodation requests should be submitted through the BME Help Centre.
