Auditing of courses
Auditing of courses
Background
Registered University of Toronto students may audit BME courses with permission from the course instructor. An auditor may attend lectures and other class meetings, take part in class discussions, and receive written confirmation of attendance. An auditor will not receive evaluations of participation, and will not be allowed to submit assignments or write examinations or tests, except by special and expressed permission. The University's Code of Student Conduct will apply to auditors. The final determination of whether a person should be allowed to audit and whether space is available in the course for an auditor will be made by the instructor.
TIP: It is the instructor’s responsibility to provide the auditor with course material, including adding the auditor to online educational resources such as Quercus. If you have been accepted as an auditor, be sure to enquire with the instructor and/or teaching assistant(s) about access to course content.
Procedure
1.0: Auditing BME courses
- Students must contact the relevant course instructor to seek permission for auditing.
- If the student is accepted as an auditor, the student and instructor must complete and return the signed “External Audit Request – Professing Form” (attached to this article) to the BME Graduate Office (email the form to grad.bme@utoronto.ca).
- After returning the signed form, the auditor may formally audit the course and connect with the instructor to receive course material/content.
2.0 Auditing non-BME courses
Students with interest in auditing non-BME courses must contact the hosting department/academic unit to receive instructions on next steps for the auditing process if applicable.
Note(s)
- Individuals not registered or affiliated with the University may not audit BME courses.
- University of Toronto students are not charged an audit fee.
- An audit attendance confirmation letter may be provided at the instructor’s discretion. The letter is provided from the course instructor to the auditor. Auditors who wish to receive this letter must notify the instructor in writing before the first meeting of the class. Additionally, the auditor must have attended at least 75% of the meetings of the class to qualify for this request.
